Specialization System
Let's call them specs for short
General Information
When it comes to character build, Sengoku attempts to make it as individual and detailed as possible, which manifests in your character's application as the specialty system which lists the main practices of ninja and allows you to grade and describe your skill level in each according to your characters rank. This is not to say you will be able to maximize your skill in every field as training a certain field means that you to a certain degree neglect others, this gives everyone the ability to tailor make their character the way they see fit (within reason of course) without having to be worried about only being good at one or two things. When choosing your skill set there are certain rules one must follow to regulate the power structure of starting ninja, as such different ninja decide to go different routes in their career. We believe that this system is the best way to show those intricate difference between these choices while allowing for level play and an equal chance to advance for everyone. This thread will show the rules for each of the different archetypes that people can choose from. Those being the Sole specialization, the Dual Specialization, and the Jack of all Trades.
It should be stated that your overall rank within a specialty does not dictate what jutsu you may or may not start with. The thing that dictates this is your rank and the jutsu limitations for said rank. It also does not dictate which jutsu you can learn as anyone can learn any jutsu. However, just because you have learned and trained a jutsu does not mean your character will be able to use said jutsu perfectly. For example a D ranked ninja gets taught the Chidori their ability and speed not being adequate for the jutsu it will lose power (while still being dangerous) also it will make it easier to stop as they do not have a firm grasp on the skills required for said jutsu (think Itachi grabbing Sasuke's wrist). It also dictates the interaction between other ninjas within fights, for example, a ninja with a C rank in Ninjutsu and a Ninja with a B rank in Ninjutsu both shoot fireballs at one another if the jutsu clash the jutsu fired by the ninja with the B rank in Ninjutsu will win the clash if the Ninjas are of the same rank, however, if the ninja with the C-rank in Ninjutsu is a B ranked ninja while the other ninja is only C-rank the B ranked ninja will win.
Lastly, your grades in your specialties function much like the grades in the Special Abilities System. Which is to say that they are unique for each rank and represent a place in the hierarchy; S=Genius A=Above Average B=Average C=Slightly Below Average D=Below Average E=the worst you can be at your level. So a ninja of E rank with a Ninjutsu of A rank would be at a lower Ninjutsu skill level than an A rank shinobi with an E rank in Ninjutsu.
The SPecs
Ninjutsu - Ninjutsu (忍術; "Ninja Techniques") is a form of combat that is defined by the use and materialization of chakra outside of the body to create physical effects, which can range from something as easy as defying gravity to stick to a wall to something as difficult as creating a vast lake of water. The ability to use Ninjutsu is heavily influenced by a person's chakra control and their ability to manipulate Shape Transformation and/or Nature Transformation to produce powerful and effective techniques. Fuinjutsu and Medical Jutsu fall into the broad category of Ninjutsu.
Genjutsu - Genjutsu (幻術; "Illusionary Techniques") is a form of combat defined by the use of chakra to manipulate the flow of chakra in an opponent's brain. This is done by projecting one's chakra toward a person and then extending its flow into the target(s)'s cerebral nervous system, which can be done through several methods: this is the mechanic behind all Genjutsu. Because Genjutsu affects the "prosencephalon structure" however, it is unable to affect insects. While Genjutsu has been described in canon as falling into the broad category of Inton (陰遁; "Yin Release"), there is a difference. Whereas Genjutsu creates illusions within the mind of the targeted, Inton creates illusions within actual reality, giving form to thought and imagination. Essentially, this makes Inton illusions quasi-tangible. That being said, you should only have Inton as a release if it follows this characteristic. However, as Inton creates illusions and powerful illusions at that, it is unavailable to those without great skill within the field of Genjutsu.
Taijutsu - Taijutsu (体術; "Body Techniques") is a form of combat that focuses on a shinobi's physical abilities. Unlike Ninjutsu and Genjutsu, Taijutsu does not use chakra; rather, it relies on a person's stamina, which is built up through physical training. Practitioners of Taijutsu also tend to be skilled in the use of weapons, as it is common for hand-to-hand combat to include weaponry lessons. So much so that Bukijutsu is a subclass of Taijutsu. Taijutsu can also be combined with Ninjutsu to form Nintaijutsu, but this requires that one have both a high Ninjutsu specialty and a high Taijutsu specialty, and it will effectively lower the proficiency with other specialties.
Databook & Archetypes
Sole Specialization (SS) - Those that choose the path of Sole Specialization are those that gravitate to one of the specialties more so than they gravitate to the others. Because of this, they have trained extensively at their craft, allowing them the chance to have one letter grade higher than their level within their specialty field (their field but be noted when the archetype is written out). However, sole specialization is not without its drawback, because they have spent so much time training just the one specialty the others will falter. As such the second best specialty for a sole specialization should be two ranks below their ninja rank, for example, a B rank Shinobi with a sole specialization in Ninjutsu will have an A rank in Ninjutsu but a D rank in their second best specialty everything else would have to be D ranked or lower.
Dual Specialization (DS) - This archetype decided to focus on two aspects of their specialties, though neither will be as good as the sole specialization the two that they decided to focus on will both match their ninja rank. That being said, the drawbacks of being a DS are similar to that of being SS though not to the same extent. A DS's second-best specialty (other than their two primaries) will be one letter grade below their ninja rank and two below for third, for example, a B ranked shinobi with a DS of Ninjutsu and Taijutsu will have a Ninjutsu of B and a Taijutsu of B, However, they will have a Bukijutsu of C and a Genjutsu of D, with the others being D or lower.
Jack of all Trades (JoaT) - The term jack of all trades is synonymous with being relatively good at everything. This also happens to be the case within Sengoku as well, as a JoaT character will have kept their training equal, because of this their specialties will all be one level below their rank. For example, a B ranked Shinobi whom is a JoaT will have C ranked specialties throughout the board.
The Databook entry is basically just a table of different aspects of being a ninja. Using the archetypes above one will be able to fill out the table using letter grades. The categories are NInjutsu, Genjutsu, Taijutsu, Intelligence, Strength, Speed, Stamina, and hand seals. The archetypes pertain to Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu, however, Intelligence, Strength, Speed, Stamina, and Hand Seals cannot be specialized in but they are graded the same as Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu. and as such these can only be considered equal to the main three specializations when you use the Jack of All Trades archetype.
Advancing the Databook
Advancing one's specialties work much like the Training and Development System, which is to say that you could either stack up EXP and buy a one letter upgrade (cost the same as getting a new element). Or you can do a Training thread in order to advance. Here on Sengoku, we allow members to train until all of their specialties are S ranked and you have become the ultimate ninja so have fun and know that the sky is the limit.
