Hierarchy
At first, the Heizento were not ruled by a central authority. Though they have a King, he is only a symbol of unity for the families that have scattered throughout the world, symbolizing the clan's philosophy of God as that essential bonding agent that holds men together and establishes peace. Essentially, the Heizento have one leader, and that is the Lord of their village. They live within those lands as kin to their village-men, and their compounds are merely a meeting place for formal discussions, and a housing place for clan-volunteered funds (aka voluntary taxes). When it comes to meetings with the Lord of the village or other clan leaders, it is the responsibility of the King to act as an ambassador for his people, essentially acting as the Collective Man.
That being said, if a King also becomes Lord, their position as King is given over to the next-in-line, who serves as 'Crown King' until they pass the title of Lord onto another. When the former King retires from his position as Lord of the Grass, he does not regain his position unless the "Crown King" becomes Lord after him. Thus, peace is maintained, amongst the ranks.
The branch that adheres to this philosophy the closest is the core of the clan, which has wandered since its exodus from the Grass. Some of its members break off and find homes within villages, usually by intermingling with disenfranchised populations. For these members, their sense of culture is preserved and followed to varying degrees.

History
The history of the clan begins with a sect of alchemists who existed prior to the invention of Ninshū. They were in search of the infamous Philosopher's Stone to use as a conduit for the creation of the perfect being. The transmutation of "lead into gold"; the chasing after the key to immortality.
This sect eventually gained the Heizento name in the post-ninshū, post-Hagoromo world for their way of living; and after generations, the mating amongst members eventually produced a well-knit family that was trusted to head the group above the other members, which gave birth to the Heizento clan in further generations following. This "ruling family" eventually became known for three things, amongst the rest of the sect: their hijutsu, their summons, and the unnatural degree of expertise with which they fought alongside the creatures. By way of these traits, the Rulers were responsible for protecting the sect, which later lead to issues of corruption.
__
The hijutsu, which allowed the Rulers of the sect to literally change sex, eventually giving birth to the clan’s kekkei genkai, as over time the genome of the Heizento became more and more adapted to being so radically changed. Correlating with, as well as aiding this change, was the damage that the original hijutsu of the clan caused to the mind paired together with the clan’s methodology for combatting it.
After acknowledging that their transformations caused some members serious dysphoria, leading to extremely negative consequences, their first course of action was to make the technique unique to those members who were either able to bear the consequences, or who experienced only minor dysphoria, or (and this was the largest group) who were transgender and thus naturally receptive to the technique. This produced the first step in adaptation.
The second step was developing systems of thought and therapy that subverted strict adherences to the sex binary, allowing non-transgender members to view the world differently. More “fluidly” in fact. This was the epigenetic step.
The third step was the larger development of the full kekkei genkai over time as a combination of these three elements: step one, step two, and the third step of the genome naturally becoming more dynamic to accommodate the technique, producing the clan’s “Chaotic Regression” kekkei genkai.
__
Having integrated chakra into this search for the ultimate being, the clan developed various methods of experimentation in order to further themselves on the path of perfection. Likewise, the Heizento were always quick to welcome non-clan members into their ranks, especially those rejects who had access to Hijutsu and Kekkei Genkai. It was this very "combination of elements" that the Heizento thought necessary to propel mankind above its limitations, and also the source of their “Kekkei Genkai”. However, it was ultimately the first step towards their near destruction.
After the rise of a Heizento who dubbed himself "Kami", the already frowned upon Heizento clan became hated within Hi no Kuni for its gruesome tactics, as Kami used the clan as a tool to steal and obtain the secrets of other clans. Under his rule, the clan's original views became perverted, and its members turned their sights on power and might rather than their ancestors' alchemical plight to purify the human race of its taint. At the height of this greed was Kami himself, whose power became so great that he was given the moniker Shinobi no Kami for his omnipotence (omnipotence, in this case, referring to the varied powers that he acquired through experimentation and his command over them). He used that power to overthrow the royal family, establishing a dictatorship that, by virtue of further modifications to slow his aging, lasted for about two-hundred fifty years. Many people attempted to overthrow him during that time, but the revolts were either too external or too internal; meaning that if the Heizento themselves rose, the other clans were apathetic, and that if the other clans rose, the Heizento were apathetic. It was only once a Heizento named Kyūseishu rose up with the backing of other clan leaders that Kami was overthrown. However, the condition for such an alliance was that Kyūseishu lead his clan out of Hi no Kuni. Thus began a long journey through many lands and many centuries until the Heizento found a home in the Land of Water.
By the time they arrived in Mizu no Kuni, the Heizento were not only reformed, but they had a new royal family that descended from Heizento Kyūseishu. Once in the land, they settled a territory that very quickly became famous for the beauty of the clan's farming and gardening practices, as they cultivated the land not only for their own nutrition, but also for the beauty and longevity of the soil. Moreover, the clan itself became recognized for its diplomacy, its "just-war" policy, and its Unitarian attitude toward its neighbors. As in their ancient past, the Heizento became, over time, a sort of safe haven for the rejected and "useless" members of other clans, which greatly increased their population. However, they also continued the studying of the abilities of other clans, but only where ethical, usually receiving the means of their studies from those that they adopted.
A great contributor to this change in culture was the fact that, through Kyūseishu, the remnant of the former ruling family began to mate with the "general" Heizento, thus sharing their genetics and secrets with the rest of the clan. A new perspective was born during that time, as the royalty became the peasantry and the peasantry became the royalty: "Symbiosis is the secret to power; altruism is the secret to existence.”
In time, however, even these practices became despised. Yet, the Heizento refused to stop. The fear of losing their secrets, alongside greed for the Heizento’s resources, led the other clans to stand against the Heizento. Fortunately, this inspired the disenfranchised from those clans to side with the Heizento, seeing a real way out of their oppression for once, and this at least presented the Heizento with such a formidable presentation of power that the surrounded clans were almost forced to let them leave in peace.
From Mizu no Kuni, the clan experienced repeated rehearsals of this same pattern, with the latest being an exodus from Land of the Grass many years ago. Fear of their inclusiveness, and then envy towards their success despite oppression, has created “The Heizento Problem”, an idea that the clan is a threat because it aims to conquer any society it ever enters and eventually rule the world. While nonsense, it has kept the clan from finding a home.
Currently, they are nomads who’ve found refuge in the desert far away from Sunagakure. They’ve renovated the lands in these places to their favor, and have also provided a home for a particular branch of their chameleon summons who dwell in desert lands and help to protect their lands. However, because they have learned to never stay in one place too long, they usually abandon their homes in order to travel for a set amount of time. “Desert Monsters who terrify travelers” and “the sight of idyllic oasis” are the only hint that the Heizento have set up shop in Kaze no Kuni. But many would likely confuse these as preservations of desert-based mythologies from older times.
A somewhat trivial fact, many Heizento have used their knowledge of sugar (alongside their farming knowledge) in the culinary arts to create businesses across the shinobi world. If there are very famous and very meticulously beautiful restaurants in your part of the world that are known for having splendid foods (and even better desserts) and an earth-like organic presentation, it is most likely a product of a Heizento. Because of this, the core clan receives great sums of taxes from around the world that it uses to support itself, and any branch members who remain in contact with the core clan can seek financial support from them.

Abilities
[Hiden]
("秘伝; Secret Traditions")
[Chameleon Contract — In the past, the Heizento forged a contract of partnership with a particular group of chameleons who were notorious for their elusiveness, and thus sought after for their competence in the realm of espionage. Since then, it has become tradition for each member of the clan to be gifted with at least one personal summon with whom they share a lifelong bond.
Through the "Doppelganger-Camouflage Secret Technique" of the Chameleons, the personal summon(s) assimilate the chakra of their human counterparts (a process that begins and ends in infancy, for the human, and youth, for the chameleons); and as the human and chameleon(s) grow together, the chameleon's chakra becomes a "camouflage" of their human's, establishing a synchronized connection between them as the chameleon becomes a clone of their human and vice-verse, effectively gaining access to the hijutsu and kekkei genkai of the clan. This makes the chakra of the chameleon into a perfect match with the chakra of their human, causing any combination techniques performed by the pair or group to be considerably more powerful than what would normally be possible, even for collaborations. The connection also grants a telepathic bond between the partners
[Knowledge of Biology, Chemistry — Due to their kekkei genkai making them the perfect tools for experimentation, the Heizento has acquired a vast knowledge of biology; and through the use of their kekkei genkai, have gained an equal knowledge of chemistry and thorough knowledge of other scientific fields of study. Alongside their philosophical orientation, the clan has always exceeded in fields of intellect and study and discovery. For this reason, clan members are known to make exceptional medics, diplomats, psychologists, profilers, and so on.
[Chaotic Regression of Man — The 'Chaotic Regression of Man’ is the umbrella name for a series of techniques that allow Heizento clan members to transform their bodies at the genetic level, fully exploiting their kekkei genkai.
While it’s possible to achieve quite drastic changes, such drastic changes require specific techniques that branch off the actual ‘Chaotic Regression of Man’ technique, which only governs minor changes such as producing an extra arm or a tail or a set of wings, changing skin color or hair color, increasing the size or length of limbs, or increasing lung capacity. To achieve anything that actually changes the constitution of the body — which would require extra or “special” details — such as becoming elastic or increasing and decreasing the density of the body or adopting the traits of other life forms or metabolizing/becoming resistant to certain elements etc — these kinds of transformations require specific techniques.
Before learning the Chaotic Regression of Man technique, members of the clan are required to learn the ‘Human Transformation Technique’ as a rite-of-passage, this technique being the original version of the clan’s hijutsu, used to literally transform from one sex to the other at the genetic level. After learning this technique, they are then taught the ‘Human Clone Technique’, which allows clan members to create living clones asexually, rivaling the Wood Clone Technique of the Mokuton kekkei genkai.
[Chaotic Regression]: The clan’s kekkei genkai, Chaotic Regression refers to the uniquely malleable genetic structure of the Heizento clan. It’s activity is so high that it could be described as living and active, constantly shaping itself in response to any threats that Heizento clan members may experience.
This is both a gift and a curse. While it means that the body has significantly higher survival rate than regular human beings even when exposed to the most toxic substances known to man, it also means that forms of harm that are considered to be minor by most men (such as being slandered, for example) can also trigger radical genetic changes in the members of the clan. By torturing (including bullying) or manipulating a Heizento clan member for example, it’s possible to radically and/or systematically change their worldview and personality and value system in your favor
An example of this is the prevalence of transgenderism and non-heterosexual orientations within the clan, which are significantly more common for the Heizento than for other people groups. This extreme potential for chaotic regression away from order is why the clan became named as Heizento — as “those with great composure” — because of the strict moral training necessary to make members of the clan as close to being mentally and emotionally neutral as possible before they engage with the world as individuals. (However, those born mentally ill or with certain mental conditions can be extremely troublesome and dangerous, and they are usually treated more strictly than others to the point that some identify this treatment as oppressive.)
The potency of their ability to adapt genetically is such that in 3-5 generations they could go from being fully adapted to Arctic environments to being significantly adapted to environments which express blazing heat. Epigenetic information is also extremely potent, such that children are strongly influenced by the professions and skills and values etc of their parents and grandparents and so on.
This epigenetic information also creates a kind of genetic memory that is strongest in the leaders of the clan, who use ninjutsu to store and read epigenetic information more potently than what could be achieved through what one might call “natural epigenetics”. Accessing these memories is skin to accessing a past life, although accuracy diminishes the further back one goes.
It has also been recorded in several instances that if a Heizento survives death, their body can adapt so radically that they literally become stronger from it. This could manifest in different ways to different people (those who use chakra could gain significant boosts in reserves vs significant boosts in physical ability, for example) but they must truly survive the threat of death for this to ever possibly occur. This part of the ability is known as ‘Chaotic Progression’ and is only present in certain clan members.
